MP3.com Introduces Community; Social Networking Service for Music Fans Enables Personalized Music Discovery Experience

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2004--MP3.com, a CNET Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNET) property and a leading unbiased content and discovery resource for music fans, today announced the launch of its free online community service, accessible through a new tab on the MP3.com home page. MP3.com Community is an easy-to-use social networking service that lets music fans create a personalized music discovery experience, and network with other music fans that share their interests.

Underscoring the viral nature and personal appeal of MP3.com Community, since the service launched in beta last month with no fanfare, it has attracted more than 76,000 members, with nearly 3,000 new members signing up each day. Members of the already vibrant community are actively collecting, reviewing, rating, and tracking the music that matches their personal preferences. From building an online music collection, to keeping up with favorite artists' news, tour dates, and even television and commercial appearances, to displaying preferred digital music services and much more, MP3.com Community is enhancing the music lifestyles of its members.

"MP3.com's mission is to cater to the way people learn about and listen to music today," said Vince Broady, CNET Networks' senior vice president, Games & Entertainment. "MP3.com Community is another major step in this direction. It gives users a powerful and personalized way to keep up-to-date on their favorite artists and discover new ones; to catalog, store, and share their music listening history and taste; and to find, connect, and communicate with other like minded users."

MP3.com Community members are able to:

  • Create an MP3.com profile, providing background information about themselves and their musical experience, along with customized images and icons, giving context and richness to their community contributions.

  • Rate and review artists, albums and songs. Reviews can be shared with and compared with the global community as well as other specific users.

  • Track favorite artists and receive summary updates from more than 200 sources on their new releases, concert dates, television appearances, reviews, news stories, interviews, videos, and more. Members also receive notification when another MP3.com community member posts a review related to an artist they are tracking.

  • Manage collections including listing and ranking their albums, and comparing the collection against friends' lists as well as the global MP3.com Community.

  • Share Now Playing lists highlighting the albums they are currently playing

  • Create a wish list of desired albums and compare it with other members' must-buy lists.

  • Create social networks around music providing easy access to the knowledge, preferences, and recent contributions of other MP3.com members

  • Set download preferences of favorite legal download and on-demand streaming services, customizing the entire MP3.com interface and putting their services and music literally at their fingertips

  • Customize their profile page to keep tabs on all their Community activities from reviews, ratings, and collections to friend lists, tracked items, and forums.

MP3.com Community members who are also gaming fans benefit from the services' integration with sister site GameSpot (www.gamespot.com) and its GameSpot Community, a similarly vibrant, feature-rich and engaging community for gamers which launched in July and now has more than 400,000 active members. Members can use a single user name and password to access both communities and will soon be able to build personalized profiles that combine their gaming and music preferences.
