SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2007--CNET
(www.cnet.com), where people go to discover the latest in tech and
consumer electronics, and a property of CNET Networks, Inc.
(Nasdaq:CNET), today announced that CNET Webware is now accepting
submissions for the first ever "Webware 100" Awards. The awards, which
are chosen by users with input from the CNET expert editorial team,
recognize the best Web 2.0 sites, services, and applications that are
leading the next wave of innovation.
Webware.com (www.webware.com), a CNET site, provides the latest
information on Web 2.0 sites, services, and applications. Its timely
and relevant blog entries about hundreds of web-based services, such
as wikis, blogs, and social networking sites, help users determine the
best products for them to use in their daily lives. Webware is led by
veteran tech journalist and CNET Editor at Large Rafe Needleman, with
additional entries from the CNET editors.
"With dozens of new Web 2.0 sites cropping up each day, it is
confusing for users to determine which are worth using today, and
which will survive," said Rafe Needleman. "By combining the expertise
of CNET editors and the first-hand experience of the Web 2.0 user
community, we'll be able to sort through the Web 2.0 scene and
identify the best sites, services, and applications."
Submitting an entry is free and anyone may do so. To qualify,
nominated sites must be live by Monday, May 7. Beta sites are
accepted, but must be in open beta. Each service must be entered into
one of the Webware 100's ten categories. The deadline for submissions
is May 7, 2007.
Companies have the choice of submitting their website, web
service, or applications in one of the following award categories:
- Browsing (web browsers, extensions, widgets, and security)
- Communications (e-mail, chat, VOIP)
- Community (social networks, groups)
- Data (search, storage, backup, sharing, and sync)
- Entertainment (games and contests)
- Media (audio, video, photo)
- Mobile (portable utilities and apps)
- Productivity (apps, business tools, commerce)
- Publishing (blogging, web content, design tools)
- Reference (mapping, reference works, and education)
When public submissions close, CNET editors will review the
entries and identify the top 25 finalists for each of the ten
categories. Sites, services, and applications will be judged by their
usefulness, design, and/or ability to engage users. Beginning on May
14 through June 3, the public will be able to review the top 25
finalists in each category and participate in voting, ultimately
determining the Webware 100 winners.
Webware 100 winners - the top 10 sites and services in each of the
10 categories - will be announced on Monday, June 18, 2007, and will
be posted on Webware.com, as well as CNET.com.
